Our History

Beginning

In 1998 God gave the burden to Dr. Varughese Mathew (Saji) to assume responsibility for a financially struggling mission that already existed in India. This small group was started by great man of God Pastor Mathew Oommen in 1979 in North India, who was at that time working for the government of India in Delhi. In 1982, Pastor Oommen registered this group as a church  with twelve missionaries. God had a wonderful plan for this group and it was slowly growing with established churches in various parts of northern India. Dr. Varughese Mathew (Saji) joined as the director of this group and gave new direction to this ministry. After prayer  the leaders together gave a new name to the ministry called, "Harvest Mission to the Unreached" and set a goal to reach the unreached in India. This ministry was registered as 501(c)(3) organization in the USA.ourhistory

Pastor Varughese Mathew and Pastor Mathew Oommen invited Lawrence "Buck" Epps to join the ministry as treasurer after his retirement from an oil company in 2000 and Gary Burgess volunteered to handle the big job of mailing our monthly newsletter. God has blessed HMU with steady growth in human and financial resources over the last ten years. The monthly mission support has tripled from 2000 to 2011. Our recent 2011 annual conference had 200 attending as compared to the 25 shown above attending the 1999 conference. Now HMU not only has gospel outreach to northern India but also trains and supports missionaries in Nepal. Special giving by our supporters has enabled HMU to assist local believers in constructing many new of churches. Our children's outreach programs have grown until now hundreds accept Jesus as Lord each year.  HMU gives honor and glory to our great God for allowing us to be part of his plan to bring in a harvest of Indian souls.
