Harvest Mission to
the Unreached (HMU) is a
non-denominational, 501(c)(3)
organization. We are mainly
reaching the unreached Northern India through native missionaries.
To fulfill this great purpose and the great commission of our Lord Jesus
Christ, we are involved in various activities and ministries such as Church
Planting, mobile gospel team, Bible school, literature ministry, leprosy
ministry, children’s ministry, Medical mission, music ministry etc. All gifts
are tax deductible. We have Board of Directors
both in India and the U.S. to run and control our work.
Beginning
In 1998 God gave the burden to Dr. Varughese
Mathew (Saji) to take the responsibility of a financially struggling
organization that is already existed in India with different name. This small
group was started by great man of God Pastor Mathew Oommen in 1979 in
North India, who was at that time working for the government of India in Delhi.
In 1982, Pastor Oommen registered this group as a church with twelve missionaries. God has a
wonderful plan for this group and it was slowly growing with established
churches in various parts of northern India. In 1998 Dr. Varughese Mathew
(Saji) joined as the director of this group and gave new direction to this
ministry. With prayer the leaders
together gave a new name to the ministry called. “Harvest Mission to the
Unreached’ and set a goal to reach the unreached in India. Soon, this ministry
was registered as 501(c)(3) organization in the USA.
India – Fact
India is one of the large unreached nation with over one
billion people of different cultures, languages, religions, traditions, races
and colors; stands apart from other nations in its diversity.
It is one of the oldest civilized countries in the world.
The ‘Indus Valley civilization’, dates
back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest infiltrated onto
Indian lands about 1500 B.C. They merged with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants
and created the classical Indian culture and Hinduism. 'India' is mentioned
twice in the Bible-- Esther 1:1; 8:9.
It is estimated that there 428 languages in India and out of
which 22 official languages. Also around 2000 dialects have been identified in
India. India, with only 2.5 percent of the total world area, has nearly 16
percent of the total world's population. Hinduism is the major religion with
80% of the population. India is one of the largest Muslim country too.
Christianity remains as the smallest group with less than 3% of India's
population, of which the majority are traditional Christians. India has a 28
states and 7 union territories.
Despite impressive gains in economic investment
and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with
Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation,
extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife. According to the history,
it was the Apostle Thomas, the disciple of Jesus who brought the gospel to
India in around AD 52. But it was restricted to just southern India.
