Who and where we serve?

Harvest Mission to the Unreached (HMU) is a non-denominational, non-profitable mission organization. Our goal is to reach the whole of unreached Northern India through native missionaries and to plant churches. To fulfill this great purpose and the great commission of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are involved in various activities and ministries such as mobile gospel team, literature ministry, leprosy ministry, music ministry etc.

Along with that we are also engaged in community development, children's ministry and orphanage. Harvest Mission to the Unreached is a 501(c)(3) non-profit registered mission organization. All gifts are tax deductible. We have staff members both in India and the U.S. to run and control our work.

HMU was started in India by Pastor Mathew Oommen in 1979, who was at that time working for the government of India in Delhi. In 1982, we registered as an organization with twelve missionaries, with established churches in various parts of northern india. Today we have 50 missionaries and are continuing to grow. In 1998 Dr. Varughese Mathew joined HMU as its Director.

India - a large unreached nation with over one billion people of different cultures, languages, religions, traditions, races and colors; stands apart from other nations in its diversity. But the sad fact is that still thousands of villages are yet to be reached with the Gospel. Hinduism is the major religion with 75% of the population. India is the second largest Muslim country too.

Christianity remains as the smallest group with less than 4% of India's population, of which the majority are traditional Christians. India, with only 2.5 percent of the total world area, has nearly 16 percent of the total world's population. It is one of the oldest civilized countries. ('India' is mentioned twice in the Bible-- Esther 1:1; 8:9). Next to China, India is the largest unreached country in the world. It is estimated that by 2020, India will be the most populated country in the world. 33% of the world's poor live in India.

10% of the population in India hold more than three quarters of the total wealth of the nation. 44.9% of the people in rural India and 36.5% of urban India live in absolute poverty. India is a democratic republic, with a parliamentary form of government. It consists of 29 states and 7 Union Territories. She has around 5000 different people groups speaking nearly 1700 kinds of languages.

It was the Apostle Thomas, the disciple of Jesus who brought the gospel to India in around AD 52. But it was restricted to just southern India. Western missionaries brought the gospel to India from around 1500 AD when the Europeans landed in India. For years, missionaries from South India travelled to the North to preach the gospel. Today the situation has changed as we have committed people from North India who are more mission-minded than ever before. India has some of the largest and most highly developed missions in the world. In Asia, India has the largest number of cross-cultural missionaries.

Lately there has been a lot of restrictions to foreign missionaries working in India and they are not permitted to come into the country. For the last five years the Church is being persecuted by religious fundamentalists as communalism is spreading rapidly throughout India.
